Legal assistance to seekers of international protection

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Human Rights League has been helping with the consequences of the war, specifically by providing legal assistance and interpretation services for displaced persons. In 2025, we are continuing the project funded by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The main objective of the project is to assist people in need of international protection by ensuring quality legal assistance, interpretation and access to information, as well as protection against sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project Activities:

  • Providing legal counseling in Bratislava, Košice, Trnava and Prešov
  • Advocacy in specific areas of protection
  • Asylum counseling and legal representation of applicants for international protection
  • Organizing Protection and Inclusion Working Groups in partnership with UNHCR
  • Social counseling
  • Community interpreting in healthcare facilities and during the legal counseling
  • Profiling and monitoring - Interviews mapping the most urgent needs of displaced persons
  • Training and dissemination of information to partners at the national and local levels, as well as to the public
  • Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)

The project's target group includes:

  • Temporary protection applicants
  • Persons with temporary protection status
  • Persons fleeing the war against Ukraine (third-country nationals, persons entitled to temporary protection who have not yet registered for temporary protection)
  • Refugee-led organizations
  • The Ukrainian community living in Slovakia
  • Vulnerable persons (unaccompanied children, LGBTQ+ people, women with children, persons with disabilities, members of marginalized groups including Roma, third-country nationals, stateless persons)
  • Host communities in Slovakia

From March 2022 to August 2024, the Human Rights League provided counseling at the Assistance Center in Bratislava, a large-capacity center for Ukrainian displaced persons. At the center, we established cooperation with the Foreign Police Department and ensured pre-registration of people applying for temporary protection.

The project is implemented with financial support from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
