Expert seminar: "Detention of Foreigners as a Measure of Last Resort"

Seminar is organized by the Human Rights League in cooperation with the Law Faculty Of University of Pavol Jozef Safarik and with support of UNHCR – the UN Refugee Agency and Embassy of the United States of America in Slovakia.
The Human Rights League organizes an expert seminar " Detention of Foreigners as a Measure of Last Resort or How to successfully apply less restrictive measures: Special Focus on Protection of Vulnerable Persons and Best Interest of a Child."

Can detention be the only solution proposed by the state to those who are vulnerable without any financial resources? Or shall state provide material conditions also for application of less restrictive measures? How do they do it in other countries? Can it work out? Does reputation of a transit country play any role? Which role do NGOs have in organization of alternative less restrictive measures? What is more expensive for the state: detention or less restrictive measures?
We will jointly search the answers to these questions in the forum of state experts, academics, lawyers, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations with practical knowledge.
The seminar will take place on the 23rd Janauary 2019 in the premises of the Law Faculty of University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice. The seminar participants, who are interested, will be able to visit Police Detention Centre in Sečovce on the following day.
