Let's Give Refugees a Chance II

The project aims to prevent xenophobia from refugees and migrants,  as well as to protect the fundamental human rights to freedom and right to asylum.

This project builds on the long-standing activities of the Human Rights League, in particular the previous project, "Let's Give Refugees a Chance."

The duration of the project is from 01.06.2018 to 31.12.2018.

The main activities of the project will be:

1) Integration Forum

Within the framework of the project, we will implement an Integration Forum in the 2018 Autumn Forum to integrate the forums we have implemented in previous years and will focus on current issues in migration and integration, such as the preparation of a new Migration Policy and a state-level integration program for refugees, integration of refugees at the level of cities, labor migration and so on. The Integration Forum brings innovative information on migration and asylum for professionals as well as introduce objective information into the public debate on migration and asylum. Learn about the Forum, which was held in 2017.

2) Supporting the activation of refugees and foreigners

Our long-term goal is to gradually empower the refugees and foreigners living in Slovakia. As part of the project, we will provide a lecturer workshop for 5 to 6 refugees / foreigners on the current topic. Since many refugees living in Slovakia for a long time and managing the Slovak language are contracted by the Migration Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, foreign police and non-governmental organizations as interpreters, we consider the importance to organize a workshop on ethical rules and quality standards for conducting interpreting activities. Last year, we focused on promoting foreign business, more information about a study visit in Vienna can be found here.

3) Legal advice provided to the asylum seeker in the first-degree asylum procedure

By doing so, we will ensure the effective application of the right to asylum and the right to the personal freedom of asylum seekers who are currently not secured.

Ensured asylum seekers are entitled under Act no. 327/2005 Coll. on the provision of legal aid to persons in material need for legal aid and representation before the courts by the lawyers of the Center for Legal Assistance in Cases of Asylum, in administrative expulsion proceedings, in proceedings for the retention of a third-country national or in proceedings for the securing of an asylum seeker, assistance in the asylum procedure at the first level, ie before the Migration Office of the MVSR is absent, and this part of the proceedings is crucial. The Human Rights League implements a legal aid project for asylum seekers, the Asylum Legal Advisor, which is supported by the European Fund AMIF, but as part of this project, asylum seekers are the target group of exclusions.

With the project Let's Give Refugees a Chance II, we try to give response to this shortcoming and will therefore provide legal advice, including legal representation, to the asylum seeker, both in ÚPZC Medveďov and in ÚPZC Sečovce, with special emphasis on ensuring legal representation for families with children, unaccompanied minors, women, and other vulnerable asylum seekers. As part of the project, we will also produce informative leaflets for asylum seekers that we will also distribute to the police departments.
